Many people don’t know what the perfect Collage Dorm Party looks like. Whether you’re hosting for the first time, or have been throwing loads of parties in the past and want to mix things up a little, we’ve got some tips and tricks that will take your party from “meh” to “wow”.

Some dorms allow alcohol in certain places (such as the lobby or laundry room). If this is one of those dorms, we recommend stocking up on cheap beer (whatever brand you like) and wine coolers. Next, you want to stock up on bagels and cheap cheese slices. Coffee and tea are also good options because they don’t take up too much space.

Make sure you stock up on toilet paper. Dorms sometimes don’t provide enough toilet paper for the number of people that will be in there! If you have a serious lack of toilet paper, get some soft packs (like those used for cleaning purposes) and tape the top of the pack together to create a sort of makeshift roll.

Alcohol

If your dorm allows alcohol, do NOT get cheap vodka or brand-name hard liquor. Getting a handle on vodka would be more than enough to get most people drunk. Hard liquor really only gets the drinkers who are serious about getting smashed (so not your average collage student). That being said, you can buy one or two bottles of your favorite kind of hard liquor for any real drinkers in the room.

If your dorm has a microwave, get some chips! It’s always nice to have something salty to go with your alcoholic beverages. Otherwise, grab some desserts (chocolate bars are easy to store), and maybe a veggie tray or platter of cheese and meat. Some people may want those snacks later in the night when the munchies kick in.

Foldable tables and chairs are essential for perfect collage dorm party rooms. They don’t take up too much space and make it easier to set up the dance floor. Get a cheap fold-up table (about $20-$40) and limit your chairs to the essentials — folding chairs are easy to store. The cheapest chair you can find is probably better than nothing, but avoid the ones that have little holes in the bottom of them.

Music for a Perfect Collage Dorm Party

The best kind of music for a dorm party is something with a lot of variety: country, punk, hip hop, heavy metal, etc. So don’t go with just one kind of music if there are a lot of people who aren’t into it. I wouldn’t even recommend going with the same music for all nights.

Once you have your music, make sure to make the DJ table easy to access. A small table like that found in a student lounge is ideal because it’s not obtrusive and can be easily moved when needed. If you’re not sure where you’re going to put the table, take a look around your dorm room and find someplace that won’t take up a lot of space.

Have fun with it! You don’t have to throw an elaborate party if you like having simple parties. And as long as everyone is having fun, who cares if it’s not perfect? Don’t get stressed out about this information either — every dorm Party is different. This is just a general idea of how to throw a simple but fun party.
