Pakistan is a country of many traditions and varying weather. Where you are going determines what kind of clothing you are going to wear, and the overall moral code of the country determines what style of clothing you are going to wear. There are several things to keep in mind when you are traveling to Pakistan, and the rules must be adhered to for your comfort and safety.

To begin with, Pakistan’s weather varies. It can get extremely hot to almost 100° (37°C), or it can be super cold like 25° (-3° C). When you are packing for the trip, check the weather report to ensure that you are packing the right kinds of clothing. For the hotter weather you should pack light colored, light textured cotton fabrics that will give your body the ability to breathe and stay cool in the heat. These types of fabrics and Pakistani clothing also allow breezes and fresh air to get through the fabric to cool off your skin and reduce your temperature. In the winter time, bring woolen layers that will trap the heat close to your body, and make sure you have plenty of layers to stay warm in the cold wind and inclement weather.

There are also certain styles of clothing that need to be worn depending on the traditions of the country. For women, you must have your shoulders and knees covered. Pakistan is a more conservative country and women are very modest with their bodies. Do not bring any tight clothing or clothing that may reveal certain parts of your body. Wear t-shirts and long ankle-length skirts or pants. This type of ensemble is always a safe bet. Also, bring scarves to cover your shoulders should your outfit expose your shoulders a bit. The scarves are also good for covering your head, which is a good idea if you are feeling hot. A lot of religious locations require your head to be covered, so you will already have the scarf just in case.

For men, wear loose-fitting cotton shirts and linen pants. The pants prevent the bugs from biting you at night or during the day, and the loose fit is to keep you cool unless it is a colder time of year when you will want a sweater or vest. Having a blazer or some type of jacket is also acceptable as that will keep you warm during more temperate months, but will also be a nice addition to your outfit.

Other smaller items you may consider taking with you are sunscreen and a hat for the sun as well as bug spray for the regions that have a high bug population. In all, as long as you stick with what works and what works with the traditions of the country, you won’t have any problems packing for your trip. With the exception of a few conservative or religious rules, you can most likely wear what you would typically wear at home. Pack your bag, and travel safely.
